Outdoor laminates main function is to keep moisture
away from the print. One way to do this is using a process called
encapsulating. Encapsulating is basically 2 layers of laminate
with the image sandwiched in between. Proper encapsulating is done
with a small border so when it is trimmed, the edges will be completely
sealed. The most effective way to get prints ready for the outdoor
elements is using very specific laminates. Northco uses a vinyl
substance called Calendered Pressure Sensitive Overlaminate®
manufactured by Sihl. In the 3.5 mil thickness this laminate can
withstand even the most severe weather.
